☘ WTC / 911 AOH Memorial
The memorial is located inside St. Peter's Church in NYC, directly across from the World Trade Center site - The Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) 9/11 Memorial Plaque stands as a permanent tribute to the 18 Hibernian brothers and sisters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. The bronze plaque bears the names of the fallen AOH and LAOH members. It was unveiled and blessed on September 25, 2021, during a 20th-anniversary Memorial Mass organized by the New York State Board of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
It is reported that more than 200 Irish Claddagh rings were recovered from the rubble at Ground Zero following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. An estimated 1,000 people who died in the attacks had Irish roots, reflecting the deep ties between New York City and Ireland, particularly within the NYPD and FDNY. Rescue and recovery workers found the Claddagh rings while sifting through the debris. Family members also used the distinct rings to help identify missing loved ones.
The Claddagh ring features two hands for friendship, a heart for love, and a crown for loyalty. These symbols came to represent the dedication and camaraderie of the first responders, many of whom are now suffering from certified WTC/911 related illnesses.
